Jimmy Smith – b. 8 December 1925 (Norristown, PA); d. 8 February
2005; [organ] – The Downbeat readers’ poll in 1962 listed Smith as the player
of a miscellaneous instrument (in his case the organ). Marked the growing
importance of the instrument in jazz. Two years later, the organ would merit
its own category in the yearly poll.[1]
