Playlist and Notes 18 October 2022
In the second half of the show, we have several songs to chase the blues away on such a dark and dreary October afternoon. But first up, we celebrate the 105th anniversary of the birth of jazz icon Thelonius Monk (we are just a week late!). He was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on October 10, 1917, and although he died in 1982, his music, style, and live improvisation, continues to inspire musicians today. We will also hear from Monk’s song, T.S., and accomplished drummer and bandleader in his own right.
Thelonious Monk – Blue Monk (Live Palo Alto) (14:00)
John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk Quartet – Evidence (4:42)
T.S. Monk – Una Mas
Ellis Marsalis Quartet – Straight, No Chaser
The Unseen Guest – Listen My Son
Billie Holiday & Her Orchestra – Long Gone Blues
Bonnie Raitt with Habib Koité – Back Around
Lena Horne – Stormy Weather
Lee Dorsey – Someday
The Modern Jazz Quartet – Django
